Questions
Are storm windows worth it?
If your windows are in sound shape, usually yes. A storm window adds an insulating air space and a second weather barrier for a fraction of the cost and mess of replacing the window, and good aluminum storm windows last 30 to 40 years.
Do storm windows work on vinyl or newer windows?
Storm windows are made for double-hung and other older windows. They can also go over insulated windows; DOE test homes saw about 10% savings adding low-E storms over double-pane windows.
Do storm windows go on the inside or outside?
Ours mount on the outside, in the opening against the blind stop, and the glass and screen inserts remove for cleaning or rescreening.
When should I replace the window instead?
Replace when the sash or frame is rotted, the window won't open or lock, or you want a different style. We sell Midway vinyl replacement windows for those openings.
